Central African Republic – Violence in Bangui (May 1 2018)

France condemns the attacks carried out on May 1 in Bangui against civilian populations and Christian and Muslim religious buildings.

We offer our sincere condolences to the victims’ families. Those responsible for these criminal acts must be brought to justice.

France reiterates its support for the Central African authorities and MINUSCA in their efforts to restore security and State authority throughout the country. We condemn all actions aimed at hindering these efforts and exploiting religion for criminal purposes.

France reiterates its demand that all armed groups in Bangui and in the rest of the country end all forms of violence and destabilizing activities, lay down their weapons, and join the peace process immediately and unconditionally.

This violence confirms the need to move forward swiftly with the implementation of the joint roadmap for peace and reconciliation adopted on July 17, 2017, in Libreville to effectively disarm armed groups. France reaffirms its support for the efforts made in this area by the Central African authorities, the African Union, and the countries and organizations of the region.
