Central African Republic – Security situation (23 August 2017)

France is closely monitoring the situation in the Central African Republic, working closely with its African, European, and international partners.

We are concerned by the upsurge of violence against civilians by armed groups, and notably of children.

The atrocities that have been committed underscore the need for swift progress on disarmament. In this regard, we call for the urgent implementation of the joint road map for peace and reconciliation in the CAR adopted on July 17 in Libreville by the Central African authorities, the African Union, and countries and organizations in the region. It is urgent to end the atrocities and halt the appeals to hatred in order to end the cycle of violence in the country.

France reiterates its full support for the actions conducted by MINUSCA and its contingents to stabilize the CAR and protect civilian populations. France supports reinforcing MINUSCA, which has deployed a seven-drone unit.

We also support the process of strengthening the Central African army with the help of the European Training Mission (EUTM), to which we are active contributors.

France reiterates its full support for President Touadéra and the Central African authorities. We encourage all Central African actors to act in a spirit of unity and national reconciliation.

Finally, France calls on all CAR’s partners to maintain their commitments to the Central African authorities and their support for MINUSCA.
