Q : We are currently hearing a lot about the opening of the trial of two Canadian nationals, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who have been arbitrarily detained for more than two years in China and regarding whom you have already expressed your opinion. Do you have any response with respect to this matter?

A : We express our solidarity with the Canadian authorities regarding this matter, to which we are paying close attention. The Canadian nationals you mention must be given a just, free, fair and transparent trial and their rights of defense must be strictly observed. We also call for compliance with obligations relating to consular access, in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
