Franck Riester, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, took part yesterday in the 23rd meeting of EU-ASEAN foreign ministers via video conference.
Through this meeting, the ministers agreed to elevate the partnership between the EU and ASEAN to the level of strategic partnership. The ministers also adopted a joint statement on connectivity reflecting the shared commitment to promoting sustainable connectivity between the EU and ASEAN, based on the promotion of innovative infrastructure in the area of transport and individual mobility. The EU announced a new €20 million program to be implemented by the WHO aimed at strengthening the capacity of ASEAN members to respond to the consequences of the pandemic. This program falls within the framework of European assistance to respond to the Covid-19 crisis amounting to €800 million.
Franck Riester reaffirmed France’s attachment to strengthening relations with ASEAN in the context of the Indo-Pacific region and underscored the increased level of cooperation that will result from the EU-ASEAN strategic partnership. France was granted the status of Development Partner of ASEAN and will therefore work to strengthen our bilateral relations with the regional organization.
