From 27 May to 12 June, France is once again honouring Latin America and the Caribbean. Through more than 300 cultural, scientific, political, economic and festive events, most of which will be held online, this 8th edition of Latin America and Caribbean Week (#SALC2021) is an opportunity to highlight the variety of historical and contemporary ties between Latin America, the Caribbean and France.

After the cancellation of the 7th edition in 2020, this year’s SALC will offer a huge number of online events. The SALC website (https://semaineameriquelatinecaraibes.fr/) is regularly updated and many partners are taking this opportunity to maintain or restore ties with their audiences and networks. There is a pressing need to reopen dialogue and exchanges between everyone interested in Latin America and its relations with France.

In view of the challenges facing our planet, joint, inclusive responses are essential, driven by mutual understanding and cooperation. This dialogue at all levels, both locally and globally, is one of the main purposes of the SALC.

As wide-ranging and diverse a programme as ever

The 2021 edition draws on initiatives from Latin American and Caribbean embassies in France, as well as associations, teaching and research institutions, museums and even art galleries.

Over 300 events have been organized by almost as many partners: film screenings, conferences, concerts, dance performances, arts and crafts, tastings, exhibitions, literary readings, and the list goes on…

From Cherbourg-en-Cotentin to Lyon and Marseille, from Paris to Jacmel and from Eschbach to Bocas del Toro, Latin America Week treats the public to a wide range of Latin American and Caribbean creativity in France and demonstrates French people’s interest in the region.

In Bordeaux, several activities will revive the memory of Flora Tristan, best known as a women’s rights campaigner. In Toulouse, SALC will open with a show about Jean Jaurès’s trip to Latin America, while in Paris, the Institute of the Americas will hold a debate featuring a broad panel of experts on societies, crises and public health in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

Latin America and Caribbean Week: a lasting initiative

In 2011, at the initiative of the French Senate, the “Latin America and Caribbean Day” was introduced, to celebrate and strengthen ties between countries of the region and France.

In 2014, the “Day” became a “Week”, which was organized and coordinated by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

With each passing year, the Week has alternated between an educational, popular culture, and festive event, but it has always been unmissable, both in Paris and throughout France. It has become an occasion for meetings and shared reflection between Latin America, the Caribbean and France.
