Algeria - Q&A from the press briefing (3 December 2020)

Q : The authorities blocked several information sites on Wednesday in Algeria, raising new questions regarding the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression in this country. In his interview to Jeune Afrique, President Macron stated that certain “things” in Algeria were not “in line with our standards” and hoped that they could “evolve.” Does this statement apply to the most recent decisions by the Algerian authorities relating to the media?

A : Our position is constant: France defends the freedom of the press everywhere. The freedom to inform is a fundamental right that must be protected.
