Q: There have been an increasing number of attacks on France’s ambassador to Algeria, whom certain media outlets accuse of interfering in Algerian politics by meeting with opposition leaders. Just yesterday, Le Courrier d’Algérie ran an article headlined “Will he be called to order?” What is your response? Aren’t such meetings part of an ambassador’s usual duties?

A: Our ambassador to Algeria has the full confidence of the French authorities as he carries out his duties with all due respect for Algerian sovereignty. He is striving to strengthen bilateral relations, in accordance with the wishes of French and Algerian authorities at the highest level.
