Foreign minister Laurent Fabius welcomed his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra, this morning. They reviewed bilateral issues ahead of their follow-up visit to the French-Algerian Joint Economic Committee in Annaba on May 12.
They also continued our dialogue on the political and security challenges in the Sahel-Sahara region. Mr. Fabius reiterated France’s full support for the mediation effort Algeria is conducting in Mali to get all parties to swiftly sign the peace agreement initialed on March 1 in Algiers.
Our two countries also share great concern over the deteriorating situation in Libya and continue to discuss ways to support the mediation effort by Bernardino Leon, the UN secretary-general’s special representative, aimed at the swift formation of a national unity government.
Mr. Fabius and Mr. Lamamra also worked to strengthen cooperation between our two countries on the preparation of this December’s Paris Climate Conference.
