Afghanistan - Appointment of Jean Arnault as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Afghanistan and Regional Issues (25 March 2021)

France welcomes the decision by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to appoint Mr Jean Arnault as his Personal Envoy on Afghanistan and Regional Issues, and wishes him every success in his new position.

France is deeply concerned about the rising levels of violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. Inter-Afghan peace talks must resume as a matter of urgency in order to reach a political settlement to the conflict under the auspices of the United Nations and to reduce violence to ensure compliance with a ceasefire agreement.

Mr Arnault can be assured of France’s full support in his mission to help restore sustainable peace and stability to Afghanistan.
