Afghanistan (23 August 2017)

On August 21, President Trump announced the U.S. decision to maintain a troop presence in Afghanistan to support the Afghan government’s stabilization efforts in the face of the Taliban offensive and terrorist attacks.

France realizes the importance of this commitment and remains resolutely committed to the international fight against terrorism.

In Afghanistan as in the Levant and the Sahel, it is a threat to international security. We share the determination of the Afghan authorities and our allies to fight this scourge and welcome any decision that contributes to this objective.

France shares the conviction that this effort must be supported by all the countries of the region, and that none of them must serve as a sanctuary for movements that combat the legitimate authorities. In the medium term, stabilizing Afghanistan will require a negotiated political solution. France hopes that the peace process can be conducted by Afghan actors with the international community’s support.
