Open Data : the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on www.data.gouv.fr
As part of the French Government’s Open Data initiative led by the Etalab unit under the authority of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs set up a specific body to collect and publish the relevant information on a permanent basis.
A member of the Ministry’s General Secretariat was appointed as the coordinator. He is responsible for making the data available to all citizens, in a format that enables the information to be re-used as widely as possible.
Under Etalab’s supervision, the coordinator worked to ensure that all departments of the Ministry provided their first sets of data in December 2011. His role is to expand and update them regularly.
The databases of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cover the entire spectrum of its activities worldwide, including :
data on living and working abroad, and French communities abroad;
a comprehensive list of the contact details of consulates and embassies;
data regarding the addresses of French schools abroad (GPS coordinates);
all of France’s contributions at an international level.
In his speech on 13 June 2013, at the third annual Futur en Seine festival, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the importance of open data:
