Sakharov Prize awarded to Ms. Nasrin Sotoudeh and Mr. Jafar Panahi, Iranian human rights activists (october 26, 2012)
France welcomes the European Parliament’s decision to award the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to two human rights activists in Iran, lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and filmmaker Jafar Panahi.
This is a fitting tribute to the action and personal courage of these two figures, who have been deprived of their freedom for defending that of their fellow citizens.
Nasrin Sotoudeh and Jafar Panahi embody the fight for democracy, pluralism and the freedom of expression.
This award constitutes a message of solidarity and encouragement for all those in Iran who are fighting to defend freedom.
France, more than ever, stands alongside them.
