Participation of the minister delegate for development in the Kabul Conference on Regional Security and Cooperation in the "Heart of Asia" (Thursday, June 14, 2012)

Pascal Canfin, Minister Delegate for Development, attached to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will represent France on June 14 at the Kabul Conference on Regional Security and Cooperation for Afghanistan.

This conference is part of a process launched at the Istanbul conference on November 2, 2011, during which Afghanistan and the countries of the region pledged to take confidence-building measures in all areas likely to foster the stability and prosperity of this region, known as the “heart of Asia,” with the support of France and other members of the international community present at the launch of the Istanbul Process.

By the end of the transition period in 2014, the Afghan authorities will have taken over responsibility for security throughout the country. Regional cooperation and understanding will be more crucial than ever in order to establish lasting peace and promote sustainable development in Afghanistan and its neighbors.

On the occasion of this first follow-up conference to the Istanbul conference, the efforts of the participants in the Kabul conference will focus primarily on the implementation of confidence-building measures to combat terrorism and drug trafficking. The participants will also examine measures aimed at promoting trade, strengthening cultural and scientific cooperation and continuing the development of regional infrastructure.

This conference, which has been given the theme “A New Agenda for Regional Cooperation in the Heart of Asia” by the Afghan organizers, is part of a series that will continue with the Tokyo International Conference aimed at supporting Afghanistan’s economic development and reaffirming the international community’s long-term commitment alongside the Afghan people.

The minister delegate for development will seize the opportunity offered by this visit to Kabul to go to the French Medical Institute for Children which is managed by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in partnership with the NGO, Chaîne de l’Espoir, with financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD), and which provides Afghan children with access to high-quality healthcare and contributes to the reconstruction of the Afghan health system. Mr. Pascal Canfin will also meet with representatives of the French and Afghan solidarity NGOs working in Afghanistan.
