Sudan/ Darfur – Blocking of a UNAMID patrol (February 22, 2012)

France condemns the blocking of a UNAMID (African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur) patrol on Monday in Darfur, and the holding in detention for several days of three civilian members of this mission, by rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

It reaffirms the obligation for all parties to the conflict in Darfur to respect the freedom of movement of UNAMID, which is a key condition for the successful completion of its mandate.

UN personnel must be able to carry out their mission to protect the civilian populations and must not be impeded, including by intimidation or arbitrary detentions.

France reaffirms its full support for UNAMID’s action to ensure the security of the civilian populations and displaced persons in Darfur.
