The originals of France’s international commitments are considered to be archival documents (decree of 1 December 1980 on the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Since its creation in the 17th century, the Ministry’s Archives department has ensured the conservation of the originals of bilateral and multilateral treaties to which France is a party. Essentially, the collection dates back to the 17th century, but a few files are older than that (about 15 treaties were drafted prior to 1500). Recorded in the Pacte database when they arrive in the Archives department, new agreements signed by France are being added to it on a daily basis.
