UNESCO – Inclusion of the Nord–Pas-de-Calais mining basin on the World Heritage List (July 2, 2012)
We particularly welcomed the decision by the UNESCO committee, which met in St. Petersburg (Russia), to include the Nord–Pas-de-Calais mining basin on the World Heritage List.
This decision is the result of the collective and determined mobilization efforts undertaken by the Nord–Pas-de-Calais region, the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our Permanent Representation to UNESCO.
This international recognition of the history of the Nord–Pas-de-Calais mining basin pays tribute to all those who shaped through their toil, and often their personal sacrifice, this region that belongs to our collective memory. This decision by UNESCO is a great responsibility which all actors involved in this project will take seriously.
