France welcomes the publication on August 3 of a report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) titled “The Death Penalty in the Inter-American Human Rights System: From Restrictions to Abolition.”

In this report, the IACHR invites nations that still have the death penalty in the Americas to abolish it or institute a moratorium on its use.

These recommendations are fully consistent with a universal international trend to definitively abolish the death penalty, while a new resolution calling for a universal moratorium will be presented this fall at the 67th United Nations General Assembly.
