France supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan and hoped that the Arab Spring would give impetus to the search for a solution. The Polisario clings to Cold War-era attitudes and remains insensitive to the new reality in the Maghreb. Two further rounds are scheduled, including one in June in Europe. Are you optimistic?
A - France, which is a member of the Group of Friends of Western Sahara, supports the continuation of the negotiations and informal talks under the auspices of the United Nations.
This process can, by maintaining dialogue between the parties, contribute to substantial progress at the political level.
It supports the action of the UN General-Secretary and his personal envoy, Mr. Christopher Ross, to ensure that the parties reach a realistic, just and lasting political solution to the Western Sahara issue in accordance with UNSCR 1979 of April 27, 2011.
As the Ministre d’Etat reaffirmed on Monday in New York, we believe that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which is now the only realistic proposal on the table, constitutes a sound and credible basis for a solution. The continuation of the status quo is not in anyone’s interest.
