The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established pursuant to Resolution 827 of the United Nations Security Council.
This Resolution was adopted on 25 May 1993, in response to the threat to peace and international security represented by the serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991.
