Human rights – France’s support for the Spanish candidacy to the Human Rights council for the 2018-2020 term and its announcement of France’s candidacy for the 2021-2023 term (13 July 2017)

France promotes human rights and denounces their violation at the Human Rights Council (HRC) and in all bilateral and multilateral bodies.

We focus on our priorities with a progressive vision: promoting the universality of human rights, denouncing their violation, combating the death penalty, protecting rights defenders and journalists, protecting children in armed conflicts, and combating forced disappearances, to name but a few.

At the Human Rights Council, we take part in debates and – with and via our partners – initiate resolutions such as the resolution on extreme poverty at the 35th session of the HRC.

In this regard, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian recently reviewed the human rights situation in the world with his Spanish counterpart, Alfonso Dastis. Fully agreeing with our analyses and sharing the same European values, they agreed that our two countries would speak with a single voice at the HRC. To that end, we have decided to support the Spanish candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the 2018-2020 term, with the understanding that France will put forward a candidacy for the subsequent three-year term when elections are held in 2020.
