Presidency of the Council of the European Union – Handover from Lithuania to Greece (January 1, 2014)
France wishes Greece every success in assuming its 5th presidency of the Council of the European Union. It assures it of its full support for its efforts – notably with respect to our shared priorities: growth and employment, strengthening the economic and monetary union, improving the management of migration flows and strengthening the EU’s maritime policy.
France congratulates Lithuania on its first presidency of the Council of the European Union, which has just come to an end and which yielded some important achievements:
critical advances with respect to the banking union, with in particular the introduction of the “Single Resolution Mechanism” to address banking crises;
the agreement on the European budget for 2014-2020;
increased support for growth and employment and significant changes regarding social matters, with the political agreement on the posting of workers and the adoption of the Professional Qualifications Directive creating a European professional card;
the reform of the Civil Protection Mechanism, aimed at strengthening the synergies between the member states in the event of a natural disaster;
the new impetus given to defense at the European Council of December 19-20, urging the member states to take responsibility for responding to crises more effectively, to remedy capability shortfalls and to develop their defense industries. It will be up to the Greek presidency to make progress toward implementing the road map.
