European Union - Mr Ayrault’s participation in the Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, February 6, 2017)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will take part in the Foreign Affairs Council on February 6.

The work will focus on the following points:

  • Ukraine: The ministers will discuss the extremely tense situation in the Donbas where deadly clashes resumed on January 29. They will take stock of the positive reforms initiated by the Ukrainian government, notably with respect to the fight against corruption, and European support;
  • Libya: The discussions will focus on the political process which should continue on the basis of the Skhirat agreement. We would like the council to reaffirm that there can be no military solution;
  • Egypt: The member states will discuss the situation in the country and the key role it plays, both with respect to the Middle East peace process and Libya following the neighboring countries conference in Cairo on January 21. They will discuss the revitalization of EU relations with Egypt and our priorities in the areas of combating terrorism, respect for human rights and the development of economic relations;
  • Middle East peace process; following the conference that we organized in Paris on January 15 and in the context of the continued settlement process, the ministers will reaffirm the EU’s priorities with respect to relaunching the peace process and preserving the two-state solution.

In addition, the ministers will discuss the diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria and European support for Staffan de Mistura, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, in his efforts to relaunch the negotiation process in Geneva.
