European Union – Jean-Marc Ayrault’s participation in the Foreign Affairs Council (Luxembourg, April 3, 2017)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will take part in the Foreign Affairs Council on April 3 in Luxembourg.

The debates will mainly focus on the following points:

  • Syria: The ministers will take stock of developments in the situation following the negotiations in Geneva led by Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria. This meeting will notably focus on preparing for the ministerial conference on the future of Syria and the region due to take place on April 5 in Brussels, in which Jean-Marc Ayrault will take part;
  • Yemen: The ministers will discuss the humanitarian situation, which is extremely troubling, as well as UN efforts to promote dialogue;
  • Libya: The discussions will notably focus on the EU’s role, in support of UN efforts, in order to give fresh impetus to the political process and to ensure that Libya’s resources can be used by the legitimate authorities for the benefit of the Libyan people. The role of the Government of National Accord in the areas of security and the control of migrant flows will also be a focus of these discussions;
  • Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: There will be an exchange of views on the political crisis in this country.

The ministers will also meet with Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, to take stock of the main crises in the Middle East and the problems facing the peace process.
