Laurent Fabius’s participation in the informal meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers in Vilnius (September 6 to 7, 2013)
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in Vilnius in the “Gymnich,” the informal meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers held every six months. It was chaired by Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Linas Antanas Linkevicius, Lithuanian Foreign Minister.
The meeting started with consultations on the Common Security and Defense Policy in order to prepare for the European Council in December devoted to European defense.
The first work session was devoted to Syria and to the response to the chemical massacre on August 21 in Damascus. The ministers discussed the situation in Egypt and the efforts to relaunch the Middle East peace process. They also reviewed preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit scheduled to take place in Vilnius in November.
The second work session on September 7 was attended by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok. It was entirely devoted to the situation in Syria and to the Middle East peace process.
