European Union – Mr. Harlem Désir’s participation in the Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, May 18, 2015)
Mr. Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs, will participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council on May 18 in Brussels. The ministers will take stock of the situation in Burundi. Work will also focus on:
The Middle East peace process: The ministers will exchange views on the possible role of the EU in supporting the resumption of the negotiations;
The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: The ministers will discuss the ways in which the EU could encourage a reduction in tensions following the incidents in Kumanovo.
They will address the following points with the EU defense ministers:
NATO: In the presence of Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, they will review cooperation between the EU and NATO;
The European Council meeting in June devoted to security and defense issues: Mr. Désir will reaffirm our priorities with respect to the effectiveness and visibility of the Common Security and Defense Policy, the development of our capabilities and support for the defense industries;
Migration in the Mediterranean: The ministers will adopt the Crisis Management Concept, thereby paving the way for the launch of a maritime operation in the Mediterranean known as EU NAVFOR Med, aimed at combating the networks of human traffickers. They will discuss cooperation with third countries and the strengthening of EU external border controls.
