Enlargement: the challenges and the position of France

France adheres to its position that new applications should be examined in accordance with the principles of the new consensus on enlargement agreed by the December 2006 European Council: rigorous examination throughout the process of the individual merits of each candidate and their effective ability to meet the membership criteria (Copenhagen criteria) and the European Union’s capacity to absorb new members. This is vital to the credibility of the Union and to citizens’ support for its further enlargement.
