SDG 7. Affordable and clean energy

Share

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Presentation - State of affairs

Energy underpins numerous sustainable development goals. Today, over one billion people do not have access to electricity and 40% of the population uses only wood, charcoal or animal by-products for the cooking of their food, leading to respiratory diseases and numerous forms of pollution. This results in the deaths of 4 million people annually.

Thus, while energy was not included in the Millennium Development Goals, SDG 7 incorporates access to modern energy services which are essential for development. It seeks to significantly increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, at a time when more than 80% of the planet’s consumption comes from fossil fuels, while doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency .
