World Food Day (October 16, 2013)
France joins in celebrating World Food Day, which will focus this year on sustainable food systems for food security and nutrition.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that a third of global food production (i.e. 1.3 billion tons per year) gets “lost or wasted” due to negligence or because of inadequate storage facilities or marketing.
Global food losses and waste have serious environmental consequences for the climate, land and water use, and biodiversity. In France, the government has just launched a National Pact aimed at halving food waste by 2025.
France will double its financial commitments to food security in sub-Saharan Africa over the next 4 years and will focus primarily on small-scale farming. Indeed, supporting the investments of small producers in developing countries is essential to combating agricultural and food losses.
