France pays tribute to the memory of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who passed away on March 5, and shares in the grief of his loved ones.
This great cultural figure, who was not only a conductor but also a cellist, gambist, and musicologist, enthusiastically revolutionized the interpretation of Baroque music. Nikolaus Harnoncourt was a pioneer who became indispensable through his wide-ranging repertoire.
His work energized such French ensembles as Les Arts Florissants, Les Talens Lyriques and Les Musiciens du Louvre, as well as other, newer ensembles that have garnered international recognition.
Nikolaus Harnoncourt was promoted to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor in March 2012.
