Cultural Update – Rio Hip Hop Kemp urban dance festival (May 31– June 7, 2015)

France is being showcased at the 5th edition of Rio Hip Hop Kemp (Rio H2K), one of the world’s largest urban dance festivals. It will be held in the city’s main theaters from May 31 to June 7, with support from the French Consulate in Rio de Janeiro and the Institut français. The festival’s artistic director is our compatriot Guy Darmet, founder of the Maison de la Danse and the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon.

More than 250 dancers will perform at this year’s festival, which for the first time will feature renowned international companies. Among them are three from France: Käfig, Sébastien Ramirez, and Brahim Bouchelaghem. The June 2nd performance of “Agwa/Correria” by Lyon’s Käfig at the Municipal Theater of Rio is the highlight of the 2015 edition.

Other major French cultural events are planned in June in honor of the 450th anniversary of the city of Rio de Janeiro: the city’s first Fête de la Musique; an exhibition of works by Albert Kahn at the Cultural Center of the Bank of Brazil; a Pierre Verger exhibit at the Alliance Française; a Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster show at the Modern Art Museum; and the Varilux French film festival, which will screen the best recent French films in Rio and more than 50 Brazilian cities.
