Presentation of the United States’ contribution to COP21. Statement by Laurent Fabius (March 31st, 2015)

I welcome the publication by the United States of their contribution to COP21. This contribution confirms the objective of reducing American greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28% compared to 2005 levels by 2025, announced at the U.S. - China Summit on November 12, 2014.

This objective confirms the commitment of the United States, under Barack Obama’s presidency, to the fight against climate disruption. It is consistent with the more ambitious long-term objective of reducing emissions by 80% or more by 2050.

After Switzerland, the EU, Norway, and Mexico, the contribution of the United States - the world’s second largest emitter - represents a further step forward in the process of preparing for the COP21 in Paris. I encourage all countries to publish their national contributions as soon as possible, in accordance with the decision taken at the COP19 in Warsaw and confirmed at the COP20 in Lima.
