Council of Europe – Ratification by France of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (May 21, 2014)

Parliament has just authorized the ratification by France of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. The text will enter into force on August 1, 2014.

This convention provides for minimum standards on prevention, the protection of victims and the prosecution of crimes of sexual violence – including rape, physical and psychological violence, harassment, forced marriage and female genital mutilation. This convention is also the first legally-binding international text to include provisions aimed at combating the phenomenon of so-called honor crimes.

France calls on all member states of the Council of Europe that haven’t yet done so to sign and ratify the convention.
