Laurent Fabius’s participation in the informal meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers in Vilnius (September 6 to 7, 2013)
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will participate from today in Vilnius in the “Gymnich,” the informal meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers held every six months. It will be chaired by Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Linas Antanas Linkevicius, Lithuanian Foreign Minister.
The meeting will start with consultations on theCommon Security and Defense Policyin order to prepare for the European Council in December devoted to European defense.
The first work session this afternoon will be devoted to Syria and to the response to the chemical massacre on August 21 in Damascus. The ministers will discuss the situation in Egypt and the efforts to relaunch the Middle East peace process. They will also review preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit scheduled to take place in Vilnius in November.
The second work session on September 7 will be attended by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chairman of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok. It will be entirely devoted to the situation in Syria and to the Middle East peace process.
