WTO – Process of selecting the new director-general (March 6, 2013)
On March 5, Pierre Sellal, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received Herminio Blanco, former Minister of Trade of Mexico and candidate for the post of director-general of the World Trade Organization.
On February 5, Mr. Sellal had received Roberto Azevedo, Ambassador of Brazil to the WTO, and Ms. Mari Pangestu, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, both candidates to replace Pascal Lamy.
Following the close of nominations on December 31, 9 candidates are in the running to replace Mr. Lamy, who served two consecutive terms at the head of the WTO. The member states must choose the new director-general - who will take office on September 1 - by May 31.
