Pascal Canfin’s participation in a round-table discussion on universal healthcare coverage and development (December 16, 2013)

Pascal Canfin, Minister Delegate for Development will today participate in a round-table discussion entitled “Universal healthcare coverage: what are the challenges for development?” organized by Le Monde diplomatique newspaper, in partnership with the NGOs, Oxfam and Global Health Advocates, and with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Almost a billion people around the world do not currently have access to health services; 100 million people slip into poverty every year as a result of healthcare expenditure. Since it helps to reduce poverty and ensure the sustainability of healthcare systems, universal healthcare coverage aims to ensure that all people have access to essential quality health services, without discrimination and without the risk of impoverishment. It should be fully incorporated in the post-2015 development agenda.

One year on from the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on universal healthcare coverage, France is continuing to endorse this objective as an important response to the challenges in global health.
