Internet: the most switched-on towns
Every year for the last eight years, the "Villes Internet" association has ranked the local communities most involved in the development of public internet access. In the 2006 ratings, Metz and Le Havre headed the list of most dynamic urban areas, followed by Grenoble, Montpellier, Vannes and Orléans. "Over the last few years we have observed a qualitative leap by French cities", explains Romain Goales, project manager in this association which aims to promote the use of the internet by citizens and thereby to encourage participatory democracy.
