"Label France" No. 65

France, winner of the "Nobel" prize for mathematics

French mathematics has just received a new accolade. The 2006 Fields Medal was awarded in August in Madrid (Spain) to French researcher Wendelin Werner of the mathematics laboratory of the Orsay Faculty of Sciences (near Paris), for his work on probability theory. A former student at the École normale supérieure, he is the ninth French winner of the medal - since its creation in 1936 - and the third to belong to this world-renowned laboratory.
