‘Grand Paris’, a project launched by the government to make the French capital a competitive metropolis on a world scale, creating wealth and jobs, is set to become a reality by the year 2030. The ten international architecture and urban planning agencies commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication to work on this vast subject have presented their modernisation schemes to the Economic and Social Council. They include some of the leading names in architecture, such as Jean Nouvel and Christian de Portzamparc. All the projects focus on three main themes: post-Kyoto Protocol sustainable development, reorganisation of the transport network and bringing an end to the isolation of the outer suburbs.
