The Weeper

Peking. Wang Guiwiang, with the little girl Niuniu in her arms, is caught for selling on the black market. When Wang gets home, the girl’s parents are gone, deliberately abandoning their daughter. Changgeng, Wang’s husband, a heavy gambler, is jailed for hurting a gambler partner, to whom he owes money. Wang Guixiang returns to her village and has to start a new life, in order to pay the debts and free her husband.

In the village, her former lover helps her and proposes a new job. Since she had been a opera singer, she can become an excellent professional weeper. It does not take long for Wang Guixiang to become known, thanks to her tragic tone and her romanticism.

Liu BINGJIAN was born on October 16, 1963 in Anhui, China. After graduating from the Peking Film Academy, he worked in TV. His first feature film "Yanchuang" ("Inkstone") is the first Chinase motion picture to be bought by an American company since the creation of the Popular Republic of China. However, due to a veto from the Chinase authorities, the film can not be presented in any film show. He produced a second film " Nan Nan Nu Nu " ("Men and Women ") independently. The film casts a humorous look on homosexuality in the Chinase society and, for this reason, is again banned by the Chinase authorities.
