Archaeology pointillés

Our underwater heritage holds many treasures. For centuries, thousands of shipwrecks and their precious cargoes have lain undisturbed at the bottom of the seas. French archaeologists from the Department of Underwater and Marine Archaeological Research are recognised internationally and are involved in exploration in every sea on the globe. Their mission is to provide expert assessment, to make an inventory of marine cultural property and to ensure its protection. But they are also involved in the study of archaeological sites, as well as the dissemination of the knowledge acquired.

Introduction

Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development, the Department of Archaeology and Social Sciences supports the research of 160 archaeological expeditions. It relies on the assistance of the Commission des Fouilles (the Excavations Committee), our diplomatic offices, the French grandes écoles and our research institutes abroad.

Archaeological teams belonging to these expeditions work around the world. Within these teams, researchers are involved in a productive process of collaboration between experts in different fields. French scientists, through their cooperation with foreign partners, are helping to research and preserve the remains of civilisations and cultures.

They employ the most up-to-date methods in their work, including satellite tracking, computer simulation and genetic analysis.

Excavating and safeguarding cultural heritage in this way benefits the host country by contributing to the sustainable development of its heritage. By supporting archaeological publications on the work of expeditions funded by the department, it is possible to publicise and promote this shared heritage.
