The French Archaeological Mission in Haidra (Tunisia), directed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the French National Heritage Institute, has been excavating the site of the Roman town of Ammaedara in west Tunisia (close to the Algerian border) since 1993. Its purpose is to study how the Roman town changed in Late Antiquity and what modifications were made by Christianisation and the Byzantine conquest in the 6th century. The team is studying the town’s transformations since Antiquity up to the Islamic Period, a transformation which accelerated up until the 10th century. Research work mainly covers the seven Christian churches discovered there, the great Byzantine fortress and other secular buildings dating back to Late Antiquity (the mysterious “Monument à auges” is of particular interest).
