Head of Mission: Alain Tuffreau
The aim of the “Romanian Palaeolithic” archaeological mission is to conduct a chronological revision and provide a better characterisation of the cultures and environment in which the different human groups lived in Romania during the period between 300 000 and 10 000.
The explorations mainly aim to improve our knowledge of two periods in the Palaeolithic, the Middle Palaeolithic and Late Upper Palaeolithic periods (Aurignacian and Gravettian), both chronologically and palaeoenvironmentally. Only by conducting multiple soundings and more extensive excavations, until now quite limited, can the archaeological mission’s objectives be met.
