Introduction

Illust: photo 1 min, 38.5 kb, 141x165

The archaeological site of Kouphovouno is close to Sparta, in Laconia, on the Peloponnesian Peninsula. It covers 5 hectares in the plains on the right bank of the Eurotas and to the east of Taygetus. The site is a small artificial hill (tell or magoula) formed by the accumulation of archaeological layers.

The site is being explored by a Franco-British team led by Josette Renard, a professor at the Université Blaise Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand, Christopher Mee, a professor at Liverpool University, and William Cavanagh, a professor at Nottingham University.
