Syria - Tell Shiukh Fawqani pointillés

Summary document

Location

The Tell Shiukh Fawqani site is located in Northern Syria on the left bank of the Euphrates, five kilometres away from the Syrian-Turkish border, between the Hittite capital Carchemish and the Assyrian capital Til Barsip (Tell Ahmar). It is located in an area of exchange and communications that connects the Syrian coastal region - along the southern boundary of which, during Antiquity, Egypt of the Pharaohs was a significant influence - to the Anatolian plateau in Turkey to the North - where the Hittite civilisation developed - and, finally, to the vast Syrian steppe (Djezireh) in the east. Indeed, the steppe served as a gateway for armies and trade expeditions from Southern Mesopotamia, bringing the culture of its major cities, including Uruk, Assur, Babylon and Ur to name but a few of the better known ones, to these distant lands.
