Mission Overview

The International Moche Programme resulted from an agreement between the Peruvian directors of the Dig Programme on the Moche site and Claude CHAUCHAT, in order to complete the research carried out on the site. With respect to the Peruvian authorities on Heritage and Archaeology, the French programme is but a part of the Peruvian programme. The directors of the Peruvian programme, “Proyecto Huacas del Sol y de la Luna”, are the ones responsible for the digs and restoration. They are the ones to whom the French programme director hands in the annual report and it is with them, first and foremost, that the work objectives for the following season are discussed. The Peruvian programme directors incorporate the documents into their own annual report, addressed to the National Commission for the Assessment of Archaeological Digs.

On the French side, the preponderant source of financing is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with a contribution from the CNRS, through the basic endowment provided by the UMR 8096 “Archaeology of the Americas” (Maison de l’Archéologie et de l’Ethnologie, Université Paris 10, Nanterre). The French Institute of Andean Studies, in Lima, provides the mission with a 4x4 vehicle in exchange for a contribution to the expenses and accommodation of doctoral students working on the mission team. The French team includes, in addition to the Director, an anthropologist, Daphné DEVERLY, PhD from the University of Aix-Marseilles and an archaeologist in charge of studying animal remains, Nicolas GOEPFERT, a doctoral student at the University of Paris 1. Marie Agnès COURTY-FEDOROFF (CNRS), sedimentologist, Philippe BEAREZ (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle) ichthyologist, Fanny MOUTARDE, (PhD at the University of Paris 10) anthracologist and Carole FRARESSO (PhD at the University of Bordeaux 2) specialist in Paleontological Metalworks, have provided or are providing their temporary assistance to the mission’s undertakings.

The Peruvian side of our team includes Belkys GUTIERREZ, deputy director, five young archaeologists from the University of Trujillo, four workers, a ceramics restorer and a night watchman.
