French exports to Morocco : 3.5 billion € (2009)
French imports from Morocco : 2.5 billion € (2009)
France is Morocco’s leading trading partner and represents 18,3% of Morocco’s external trade.
In 2008, total trade between France and Morocco reached €7.1 billion (+14% compared with 2007) and the Franco-Moroccan trade balance, favourable to France for a decade, reached a record €1.4 billion (up 67%).
In 2009, France is still by far Morocco’s leading supplier, with 15% of the market share. However, despite the regular growth of our exports, our market share has been shrinking since 2000 due to the opening of the Moroccan market, which is mainly beneficial to emerging countries (with China becoming Morocco’s third-leading supplier in 2009) and European competitors (Spain).
France is also Morocco’s leading customer, absorbing 24.5% of Morocco’s exports in 2009, after falling regularly for several years. Morocco’s exports to France are concentrated in textiles, electrical and electronic components and agrifood products.
In addition, our economic relations with Morocco were characterized by growth in tourism and the significance of capital from France in the 2000s.
Moreover, France remains the leading foreign investor in Morocco.
For the period 2001-2009, the flow of FDI from France averaged €1.1b per year. In 2009, the flow of FDI stood at more than €700M and France holds 51% of total FDI in Morocco.
The number of subsidiaries of French companies in Morocco would be 750 companies, employing more than 80,000 people. In addition to that, a large number of Moroccan companies are run by French entrepreneurs or have French capital. Most major French groups are present in Morocco (34 CAC 40 companies, including Total, Vivendi Universal, Suez, EDF, Renault, Saint Gobain, Veolia, Casino, Alcatel, Alstom, Aventis, Bouygues, EADS, Vinci, BNP Paribas , Societe Generale, Credit Agricole, Axa, ...) but SMEs are also increasingly active.
