Our cultural, scientific and technological cooperation with Israel is based on a bilateral agreement that dates back to 1959. It is at a high level and functions in part through joint financing. Our actions are focussed on consolidating our position as fourth partner in the area of scientific cooperation, which has strong potential for development, on the return of a dynamic French-speaking environment (the French-speaking community is estimated to be more than 500,000 people), on ambitious cultural programming and the dialogue of civil societies (in addition to the actions initiated since 2006 by the France-Israel Foundation ). Cooperative initiatives in the transport, tourism, sustainable development and renewable energy sectors are expected to grow. The 22nd session of the Joint Committee was held in Paris in June 2003. The inauguration, in June, of the new French Institute in Tel Aviv and the opening of the first classes of a Franco-Israeli secondary school in September were highlights of 2007. Many cultural and artistic events were scheduled in 2008.
