LireWe have maintained very friendly relations with Georgia since its independence and we have high-level contacts with the Georgian government.
Within the first months after entering office, President Saakachvili made a working visit to Paris, during which he met with President Chirac. He went to Paris again and met with President Sarkozy and Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner on 13 June 2007. He met with President Sarkozy again on 30 September 2007.
In addition, France is involved in finding a resolution to conflicts: in particular, France is a member of the Group of Friends of the UN Secretary General, tasked with finding a solution to the Abhkaz conflict and is taking part in the OSCE mission in Georgia.
Parliamentary relations are intense. The President of Georgia’s Parliament, Ms.Nino Bourdjanadzé, visited France from 20 to 24 March 2006, and again, at the invitation of the WEU Parliamentary Assembly, in December 2006. The friendship groups of the Senate and National Assembly are also very active. In addition, a twinning programme has been set up between the Kakheti region and the General Council of the Yonne.
