Attacks by the LRA (January 21, 2010)

We utterly condemn the massacres and acts of violence perpetrated by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), and urge it to immediately lay down its arms.

A number of LRA leaders were rendered harmless or arrested over the course of 2009; this is a positive development. We must put an end to the activities of this armed movement, whose crimes against the civilian population, particularly women and children, have gone on for too long.

We are attached to ensuring the effective protection of the vulnerable civilian population. That is why we support the operations being carried out against the LRA in the DRC by the Congolese security forces, with the support of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), in accordance with resolution 1906 adopted by the UN Security Council on December 23, 2009, on France’s proposal.
