Over a year on from the June 2007 Berlin summit, Canada hosted the Canada-EU summit on 17 October 2008, with the main topic being the strengthening of economic partnership. This summit was an opportunity to give strong political impetus to swiftly defining the framework for a new partnership to strengthen economic integration between the European Union and Canada.

In light of the current economic context, the international financial situation was included on the agenda.

The summit was also a chance to launch common initiatives and deepen our relations on current major issues, whether in relation to international peace and security, energy or even environmental conservation, particularly the fight against climate change.
